Supporting Hospitality Workers Through Technology That Frees Up Time

Hospitality is one of the most rewarding industries to work in - built on passion, people, and delivering unforgettable guest experiences. But in a sector known for long hours and high expectations, it’s no surprise that pressure can mount.

The latest Taking the Temperature 2025 Survey by Hospitality Action, in partnership with Agilysys, reveals how these demands are affecting those on the frontlines of hospitality. While the findings highlight ongoing challenges, they also point to a clear opportunity: to better support hospitality teams by giving them the time and tools they need to thrive.

Workloads Are Taking a Toll

One of the standout statistics from this year’s survey notes that 52% of hospitality workers cite excessive workloads as a top contributor to stress - up from 43% last year. With many teams running lean, it’s clear that staff are having to juggle more than ever before.

Despite the pressure, two-thirds of respondents now say their workplaces foster open conversations around mental health - a sign of a positive shift in culture.

So how can the industry take the next step, and not just talk about stress, but meaningfully reduce it?

Smart Tech, Less Stress

For hospitality teams, time is everything. Giving time back is one of the most valuable forms of support - and that’s exactly where smart technology comes in.

Today’s Property Management Systems (PMS) do more than just handle bookings. They automate routine admin, streamline guest interactions, and centralise operational tasks. That means fewer hours spent on repetitive work and more energy available for what matters most: a thriving environment to create exceptional guest experiences in.

The 2025 Taking the Temperature Survey found that under-resourcing and understaffing, noted by 57% of respondents, was the main challenge impacting wellbeing in the workplace. This is where technology can jump in - when staff ratio is low, PMS can handle the admin tasks behind the scenes.

Crucially, this technology implementation isn’t about replacing people - it’s about enabling them. With the right tools, hotel and restaurant staff can do more of what they love, with less friction and fatigue.

Staff Are the Heart of Hospitality

Staff wellbeing should be paramount - they are the heart and soul of hospitality, providing excellent service and often the very reason for rebookings and loyal customers. The Agilysys UK-based Hospitality Industry Report found that 62% of guests said tailored experiences would boost guest retention, and 58% of respondents said that little surprises would help increase retention. This wouldn’t be possible without dedicated staff - but it’s made much easier with technology running in the background, taking mundane tasks away so that teams can focus on what they do best: creating unforgettable memories.

Tech-Driven Teams Are Resilient Teams

With National Insurance contributions rising and the current cost of living crisis, it is a tricky time to hire - but tech can help lighten the load without compromising service. That’s the power of well-designed systems, they make work feel more manageable, efficient, and enjoyable.

The Taking the Temperature 2025 results are a reminder that hospitality staff deserve more than just applause for their resilience - they need real support. By embracing smart, intuitive tech, the industry can build stronger, happier teams who stay for the long term.

Let’s give people the time to do what they do best: delighting guests. Because when staff are supported, guests feel the difference.
