What is a balloon debate?
A balloon debate is a lively activity where participants imagine they’re in a sinking hot air balloon and must argue why they deserve to stay aboard. Traditionally used in UK schools to build confidence and debating skills, speakers adopt characters and use persuasion and creativity to avoid being “thrown out.” In 2023, HOSPA's Sustainability Advisor Sarah Duncan, adapted the format for a sustainability panel, creating The Great Green Balloon Debate. In 2024, with HOSPA and GSI, it became a full annual event. Instead of famous figures, speakers champion sustainability themes - competing playfully while highlighting the importance of collaboration.
