New temporary and precautionary measures to prevent the spread of the new Covid-19 Omicron variant have come into force, with a hospitality settings exempt from mask wearing.
Health minister Edward Argar said: “It’s about striking a proportionate balance. It’s in the nature of the venue. In a pub you’re drinking. You can’t do that if you’re wearing a mask.”
Night Time Industries Association CEO Michael Kill said: “Although somewhat tentative about the coming weeks, [we] need to be clear that the sector is still extremely fragile and will not survive further trade inhibiting restrictions or a potential lockdown.
“The current baseline mitigation’s within businesses across this industry, have been extremely effective. Coupled with the vaccination programme we must remain confident that we are in a stronger position to deal with variants than many other countries across the world.”
